There are so many tips to having a great time as a campsite courier!  I will add more as they spring to mind and if you are a courier please add tips to the forum and they could appear here! For now:
  • Do as you are told: You are there to work. WORK HARD... then you can PLAY HARD!
  • Do your washing up and keep your tent clean. You really don't want an ant infestation (or worse) in your tent.....nor does the person you are sharing with.
  • Don't walk around the site with your headphones on. You never know when a customer is behind you, trying to get your attention.
  • If a customer asks you to do something do it STRAIGHT AWAY.  If you really can't then make a note of it and do it later and let them know that it has been dealt with. A lot of couriers have notebooks with them when they're cleaning or walking around the site in their uniform.
  • Look after the customers and they will look after you.
  • Look after your bike!  It's a very useful piece of equipment.
  • "Afterbite" is the best thing for any kind of insect bite!
  • If you're English get a Nationwide account to be paid into. They don't charge for cash withdrawals in Europe.
  • If you are working somewhere hot then take water with you everywhere!
  • NEVER drink alcohol on night duty, use it as a chance to let your liver recover.
  • Get off site on your days off....and relax.
  • Learn from others, especially if you get there half way through the season. Even if you are a "returner" every manager is different and likes things done in a specific way.
  • When you're cleaning, get into a routine, otherwise you'll forget what you've cleaned already and I've found I'm much quicker if I follow the same routine in each mobile/ tent.
  • If you have to unblock a sink but a washing up bowl won't fit under the pipe then ask the customer if it's OK to use their frying pan to catch the water instead. Then flush it down the toilet and wash up the frying pan.
  • If you do demo cleans and have to defrost a very icy freezer then try melting it a bit first with a hair dryer. But do be VERY careful, as water + electricity is a VERY NASTY combination. NEVER put the dryer in the freezer!  Normally however, when based in a hot climate, if you turn the fridge off as soon as you get into the clean it's defrosted by the time it gets to cleaning the kitchen.
  • If you find a truly gross microwave fill the heat-proof jug with water and put it into the microwave, on full power for two minutes. It steam cleans it and makes it easier to wipe away dirt and stains.
  • You can still eat pizza even without an oven. Fry the base on the hob and then grill the top afterwards!
